MOKAN was incorporated in 1974. MOKAN's history is one of involvement in the development and growth of minority- and women - owned construction-contracting firms. MOKAN serves as a vital link between M/WBE's and the general construction industry. MOKAN has a strong commitment to helping M/WBE's maintain a mutually beneficial and profitable relationship between contractors, developers and government agencies.

MOKAN's primary function is to maximize opportunities for the participation of City - Certified Minority and women owned businesses in the construction industry, particularly in the private sector, in addition to support on public sector projects. This is accomplished by education and training, and technical assistance in the preparation of bonding, insurance and loan application, and the provision of financial counseling. MOKAN assists the Lambert DBE Program through referrals, on an as needed basis, of companies wishing to be certified as a bonafide minority or women business through the Lambert DBE Program.

MOKAN is the principal source in St. Louis, Missouri for practical hands on assistance for firms owned by minorities and women. For over two decades, MOKAN has successfully fought on behalf of its members, and millions of dollars of contracts have been awarded to firms owned by minorities and women through the direct efforts of MOKAN.

MOKAN was responsible for the Mayor's issuance of an Executive Order which mandated that good faith efforts must be made to insure a minimum goal of 25% & 5% MBE/WBE participation on City of St. Louis- funded projects, St. Louis Public School projects, and Metropolitan Sewer District projects.

MOKAN'S GOAL IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF QUALIFIED MINORITY AND WOMEN CONTRACTORS, AND TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF PUBLIC AS WELL AS PRIVATE DOLLARS SPENT WITH THOSE FIRMS.

As we work diligently towards opening the doors to new opportunities in the private sector- we are filled with great expectations, because we know hard work yields results.
